摘要:
This presentation will focus on recent technical developments and applications of two ion sources for ambient mass spectrometry: dielectric barrier discharge ionization (DBDI) and secondary electrospray ionization (SESI). The operating principles, analytical figures of merit (detection limit, softness of ionization, upper mass limit, etc.) and the range of compounds that can be analyzed (polarity, volatility, molecular weight, etc.) will be discussed. DBDI is especially powerful for ionization of compounds with only moderate polarity that are difficult to ionize with ESI. SESI has recently been shown to be a good choice for the ionization of more polar trace volatiles, for example, metabolites in exhaled breath. DBDI-MS has many diverse applications. Examples will include the detection of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and chemical warfare agents. For the latter, it is possible to run a DBDI source on a portable instrument. Finally, DBDI can serve as a post-ionization source for neutral ablation products and enhance the sensitivity in mass spectrometry imaging applications. Applications of SESI-MS in our laboratory center largely around rapid, non-invasive, on-line analysis of breath for medical diagnosis. This includes the profiling of novel volatile biomarkers, for example, for respiratory diseases such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cystic fibrosis. Monitoring of metabolic changes during sleep via real-time SESI-MS will also be shown.
个人简介:
Renato Zenobi is Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Organic Chemistry Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. Born in Zurich in 1961, he received a M.S. degree from the ETH Zurich in 1986, and a Ph.D. at Stanford University in the USA in 1990. This was followed by two postdoctoral appointments at the University of Pittsburgh (1990 - 1991) and at the University of Michigan (1991). Renato Zenobi returned to Switzerland in 1992 as a Werner Fellow at the EPFL, Lausanne, where he established his own research group. He became assistant professor at the ETH in 1995, was promoted to associate professor in 1997, and to full professor in 2000. In 2010 he was appointed Associate Editor of Analytical Chemistry (American Chemical Society). Zenobi’s research areas include laser-based analytical chemistry, electrospray and laser-assisted mass spectrometry, ambient mass spectrometry, and near-field optical microscopy and spectroscopy. He has made important contributions to the understanding of the ion formation mechanism in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry, and to ambient ionization methods. He is well known for the development of analytical tools for the nanoscale, in particular TERS (tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy), a spectroscopic methodology with ≈ 10 nm spatial resolution. Renato Zenobi has received many awards for his scientific work, including the Michael Widmer Award (2006), honorary membership of the Israel Chemical Society (2009), honorary professorships at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Thomson Medal (International Mass Spectrometry Foundation, 2014), the 2014 RUSNANO prize, the 2015 Fresenius Award (German Chemical Society/GDCh), the 2023 ACS Award in Spectrochemical Analysis, etc.
