报告摘要:
The notion that metals can be encapsulated inside carbon cages has generated much excitement since the mid-1980s report on the laser vaporization of metal/graphite surfaces. Thanks to the discovery of Kratschmer-Huffman’s new electric-arc synthesis in 1990, it became possible to isolate the first endohedral metallofullerenes in milligram quantities. After overcoming challenges in metallofullerenes separation science, the successful derivatization of the carbon cage surface has opened the door to pursuing metallofullerenes applications (e.g., medical contrast agents). In this talk, I describe 4 decades of progress, starting with lasers and finishing with MRI images of rats using functionalized metallofullerenes.
