报告摘要:This talk includes two parts, far-IR free-electron laser (FEL) and its applications.  I will start my talk on the ultra-compact far-infrared (far-IR) free-electron laser (FEL) oscillator that I built at Stanford University when I was a graduate student there. This FEL oscillator employed an MeV thermionic gun as its injector. I will then present our recent study on THz superradiant FEL to achieve MW peak radiation power without a laser oscillator. Currently we are actively helping the superconducting-accelerator team at Peking University to build a high peak- and average-power THz FEL amplifier with tunablity between 15-85 cm-1. This far-IR FEL amplifier could become the most advanced source in the world. I might also talk about our on-going effort on the realization of table-top far-infrared FEL driven by a laser modulated keV electron beam. As for applications, I will present how a far-IR FEL could be useful to the study of chemistry, biology, medicine, and solid-state materials.
