报告摘要:

In the mid-1990s, a Nobel prize was awarded to Smalley, Curl, and Kroto for their experimental discovery of a new form of spheroidal molecular carbon called fullerenes.  In this research seminar, I will give tribute to the historical context and early years of fullerene discovery, the different approaches to fullerene synthesis, and advances made over the years in their purification methods.  The talk will conclude with an overview of their properties, reactivity, and applications.

报告人简介:

Dr. Stevenson is currently a Full Professor of Chemistry at Purdue University Fort Wayne.  In 2023, Dr. Stevenson was offered and accepted the position of Center Director at Purdue University Fort Wayne’s new Center called “F.I.R.S.T. Molecules.”  The acronym F.I.R.S.T. is the abbreviated form of Fullertube Interdisciplinary Research, Science & Technology.  Currently, more than 30 research groups worldwide are requesting Dr. Stevenson for collaborative samples of fullertubes to investigate their properties and application development.

The year 2023 also marks Dr. Stevenson’s 30-year anniversary of research experience with fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenes.  Dr. Stevenson has been awarded 11 research grants by the United States National Science Foundation.  He has 8 international and national patents, and he is an author of 74 publications, 6 book chapters, and 235 research presentations.  Of high accomplishment, Dr. Stevenson has 3 papers in Nature and also 22 publications in the prestigious Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS).

In 2023, Dr. Stevenson has a 30-year career of being a “new molecule chaser.”  For example, the decade of the 1990s includes his co-discovery of trimetallic nitride endohedral metallofullerenes in 1999.  In the decade of the 2000s, Stevenson discovered the first molecules of encapsulated oxygen atoms with their synthesis and isolation of the new class of metallic oxide clusters in endohedral metallofullerenes.  In the most recent decade, Dr. Stevenson and Dr. Su-Yuan Xie collaborated with the isolation and X-ray crystal structure of pristine new C100 fullertubes in 2020.  These new molecules, with the name "fullertubes," have a nanotube belt tubular structure (e.g., single layer of rolled graphene) with each hemispherical endcap being half-fullerene.
